Sedation Dentistry Explained: How You Can Finally Relax at the Dentist This Spring

At Clarkson Dental Group, your comfort and sustained oral health are our top priority. But we know that many people avoid going to the dentist at all costs because they’re afraid it’s going to hurt, or they experience extreme anxiety at the mere thought of picking up the phone to make an appointment.

Fortunately, with sedation dentistry, you no longer have to worry about being scared or anxious.

Let’s explore how dental sedation can finally help you relax at the dentist this spring.

Sedation Dentistry Explained

It’s a common misconception that sedation dentistry means you’ll be “knocked out” or “put under” during your dental procedure. However, with most types of sedation dentistry, you’ll be sleepy but completely conscious.

At our Chesterfield dental office, we offer three different types of dental sedation to fit your needs:

  • Nitrous oxide — We’ll place a small mask over your nose, and you’ll breathe in this colorless, odorless gas. Before you know it, you’ll be relaxed and comfortable. Nitrous oxide wears off quickly, and you can drive yourself to and from your appointment.
  • Oral sedation — For a deeper relaxation, you can choose to take a prescription pill about an hour before your appointment. You’ll arrive at our office completely relaxed, so you’ll need someone to drive you.
  • IV sedation — We can administer sedatives directly into your bloodstream through an IV, and although you’ll be in a deeply relaxed state, you’ll be conscious and able to respond to questions and prompts. You probably won’t remember your appointment, and you’ll be a bit groggy, so it’s best to go home and rest after your visit. IV sedation may be the best option for those with severe dental anxiety or special needs.
