6 Best Practices for Healthy Teeth

We talk all the time about the various preventive, corrective, restorative, and cosmetic treatments and procedures that comprise “dentistry.” These are distinct in their own ways and are aimed at their own specific aims. In the midst of all of this, it can be easy to lose sight of the broad underlying goal that all dental treatments share: keeping patients’ teeth and gums healthy.

It sounds overly obvious and simplistic but that’s it. The whole “having a pretty smile” thing really only matters once you’ve ensured the health of the elements of that smile.

Today, we’re keeping it simple and looking at a half-dozen straightforward but vitally important things that you can do to keep your teeth in optimal health!

Best Practices for Healthy Teeth

Here are our top six “best practices” that should be part of your daily oral hygiene routine to ensure the health of your teeth:

  1. Brush frequently and with proper technique. Brush your teeth at least twice daily using fluoride toothpaste. Be sure to gently angle the brush at 45 degrees towards the gumline and use smooth, circular motions to clean all tooth surfaces and around the gumline.
  2. Floss regularly. Flossing daily removes plaque and food particles between teeth that brushing can't reach. Proper flossing helps prevent bacteria, gum disease, cavities, and bad breath.
  3. Use mouthwash. Regularly using an antibacterial mouthwash reduces the buildup of the bacteria that cause gum disease and freshens breath.
  4. Limit sugary and acidic foods. Overly sugary and acidic foods and beverages can contribute to tooth decay and enamel erosion.
  5. Visit your dentist regularly. Bi-annual dental check-ups and cleanings not only remove plaque and tartar from your teeth and gums but also allow your dentist to detect and preemptively address any issues before they become serious problems.
  6. Protect your teeth from trauma. If you play contact sports or grind your teeth at night, wear a mouth guard to protect your teeth from injury or excessive wear.
