What to Do When Dental Implants Fail

Dental implants are a reliable tooth replacement option that fits, feels, and functions like your natural tooth. They are the preferred treatment for the replacement of your missing natural teeth or removable prosthetics (dentures and partial dentures) that don’t fit or function like your real teeth. Dental implants in Chesterfield, MO can be an optimal treatment if you are a candidate.

Although dental implants have a 95 percent success rate, approximately 5 percent fail either immediately after surgery or many years later for various reasons. Here's what you should know about managing the health of your dental implant.

Understanding Dental Implant Complications

Dental implants have a very high success rate.  However, a patient can experience complications that require replacement. These can include:

  • Inadequate bone to support the implant
  • Surrounding tissue injury or damage
  • Infection with the implant or supporting structures
  • Peri-implantitis - a bacterial infection of the adjacent bone and gum tissue
  • Sinus-related complications
  • Fracture or breaking of the crown, abutment, abutment (prosthetic) screw, and/or implant
  • Injury or trauma to surrounding structures including teeth, bone, and/or gum tissue
  • Nerve damage, which may encompass paresthesia, tingling, discomfort, or pain

What Happens When a Dental Implant Fails?

In the event a failed dental implant cannot be retained, our team can guide you through the process. IV Moderate Sedation is available for all our patients who desire ideal comfort and care during their dental procedures. Our in-office IV Moderate Dental Sedation (formerly known as Twilight Sedation) is administered by our experienced dental team. We are able to provide this care in a non-rushed and relaxed setting.

Recovery of the failed dental implant and all associated infections or diseased supporting implant tissues is the initial step of healing. In addition, it will be advised that a bone graft be placed to provide scaffolding for your own bone’s healing and to jump-start recovery to ensure the fastest healing possible.

Time is our friend during the initial healing process. It is important we allow several months for the body to heal and repair itself. Our experienced dental team will continue to monitor your healing progress and provide guidance for your next steps of care.
