During your initial checkup appointment, Dr. Mahlin and his staff will perform a comprehensive oral examination. This includes an oral cancer screening and checking for signs of gum disease, oral infection, cavities, broken or defective fillings, excessive tooth wear, and bite discrepancies. We will discuss and explain all findings that result from our examination, including any recommended treatment. We will also address any concerns or questions you may have.
During the checkup, one of our Registered Dental Hygienists will do a thorough dental cleaning. Dental cleanings involve removing plaque (soft, sticky, bacteria infested film) and tartar (calculus) deposits that have built up on the teeth over time. The purpose of the cleaning and polishing is basically to leave the surfaces of the teeth clean and smooth so that bacteria are less able to stick to them and to give you a better chance of keeping the teeth clean during your regular home care. The professional cleaning of teeth is sometimes referred to as prophylaxis (or "prophy" for short). It’s a Greek word which means “to prevent beforehand” – in this case, it helps prevent gum disease. If you have signs of gum disease, Dr. Mahlin
may recommend professional dental cleanings more than twice-a-year, or more advanced gum (Periodontal) treatment.
