What happens during a periodontal cleaning?

The periodontal cleaning includes a cleaning that is deeper than a normal cleaning. We all have ‘pockets’ around our gums attachment to our teeth. In health, we may easily maintain this shallow pocket depth with both routine oral and professional hygiene care. If the oral health care is not maintained, these shallow pockets begin to accumulate bacteria in the forms of plaque and calculus. The resultant irritation of the bacteria causes inflammation and bone loss. To disrupt this progression and the presence of the bacterial infection, a deeper cleaning is prescribed.
