Improving Your Smile

From subtle changes to major repairs, Dr. Mahlin can perform a variety of procedures to improve your smile. There are many techniques and options to treat teeth that are discolored, chipped, misshapen or missing. Dr. Mahlin can reshape your teeth, close spaces, restore worn or short teeth or alter the length of your teeth. Common procedures include whitening (bleaching), bonding, caps (crowns), veneers, and reshaping and contouring.

These improvements are not always only cosmetic. Many of these treatments can solve oral problems such as improving your bite, stabilizing loose teeth, strengthening weak teeth, and improving gum health.

Teeth Whitening (Bleaching)

Bleaching, or whitening, is a common and popular chemical process used to whiten teeth. Some people get their teeth bleached to make stains disappear, while others just want a whiter shade.

Discoloration occurs in the enamel and can be caused by medication, coffee, tea, soda and cigarettes. Discoloration also can be caused by your genetic make-up or simply getting older.

Bleaching can be performed by Dr. Mahlin in our office or under dental supervision at home. Many patients prefer bleaching at home because it is more convenient and generally less expensive. Treatment begins when we create a custom mouthpiece to ensure the correct amount of whitening solution - 10% to 20% carbamide peroxide - is used and that your teeth are properly covered.

Typically, whitening at home takes two or four weeks to complete, depending on the desired shade you wish to achieve and how dark your teeth are originally. The effects of whitening typically last for one year, at which time a touch-up may be necessary. This consists of wearing the trays with whitening solution once or twice only to restore the brightness to your smile.

Bonding

Bonding is a tooth-colored filling material used to close spaces between teeth and/or to change the color and shape of teeth. Requiring a single office visit, bonding typically lasts 5-10 years. Bonding is more susceptible to staining or chipping than other forms of restorations due to the nature of the materials used. However, bonding can more affordable than some other options.

Ceramic Crowns

Crowns, also known as caps, are used in cases where other procedures will not be effective. Crowns are placed over the natural tooth to not only improve esthetics but also strengthen weakened tooth structure. Crowns have a long life expectancy and a long track record.

Porcelain Veneers

Veneers are placed over the front teeth to change color or shape of your teeth. Veneers are used on teeth that are uneven, chipped, discolored, oddly shaped, unevenly spaced or crooked. Veneers are thin pieces of porcelain bonded over the front of your teeth. Veneers are incredibly strong and have a long life expectancy.
