A crown is a restoration that covers, or "caps", a tooth to restore normal shape and size, while strengthening and improving the appearance of the tooth. Crowns are necessary when a tooth is generally broken down and fillings will not solve the problem. If a tooth is cracked, a crown will hold the tooth together to seal the cracks. Crowns are also used to reinforce a large filling when there is not enough tooth structure remaining, protect weak teeth from fracturing, restore already fractured teeth, or cover badly shaped or discolored teeth.

Before
After

To prevent damaging or fracturing crowns, avoid chewing hard objects including ice, hard candies, un-popped kernels of popcorn, etc. Chewing any hard object that could damage a natural tooth could unfortunately damage a crown. In addition to having regular dental check-ups and brushing at least twice each day and after every meal when possible, flossing between your teeth is crucial to proper care. Removing plaque from the crown where the gum meets the tooth will reduce the chances of developing decay and gum disease.

If you have any questions regarding crowns, Dr. Boyle would be happy to discuss them with you.
